In addition to recent U.F.O. sightings, the comic acknowledges the Lorain City Schools having recently hired Dr. Joseph F. Calta to be the Superintendent. Dr. Calta would have the job from 1965 - 1975. (You can read more about Dr. Calta and his long career in the Lorain school system here.)
Some younger blog readers may not recognize Dr. Calta's dropping into the car as a parody of the old Hertz commercial below.

I would never have caught the Hertz reference if you didn't explain it! Thanks!

Hey Dan,
I think you mentioned in earlier posts that Gene Patrick was a back round actor appearing on the Mary Tyler Moore show. Do you know of any links that point him out? I always thought the "Passing Scene" was creative, topical and funny with great artwork. Plus I liked the MTM show without knowing he was a part of that too. Todd
Hi Todd,
I wish I did. I understand Mr. Patrick was actually on the MTM spinoff show, the Lou Grant show. I’ve even rented the DVDs and looked in the background for him to no avail!
Thanks for the update Dan.
