It's Ham for Easter, Ma'am - April 1955 Grocery Ads

Have you decided on your menu for Easter dinner yet?

I guess it might depend on how traditional you are. According to the AI Overview on Google (which we know is always right), "Ham is a popular Easter dish, and the tradition is rooted in practicalities and historical customs, not necessarily specific religious meanings. Pigs were often slaughtered in the fall and cured throughout the winter, with the ham being ready for the Easter meal in the spring.

"Ham also became a more affordable alternative to lamb, which was traditionally the main Easter meat."

I don't remember Mom making lamb more than once – if at all – when I was growing up. I don't think Dad was all that crazy about it. So Easter dinner was always ham.

Seventy years ago, ham was very popular as well, and all the local groceries featured it in their weekly full-page ads. Here's an ample sample from the Lorain Journal of April 6 and 7, 1955.

Not everyone had to go out and buy a ham. Those lucky enough to have purchased a major appliance at Sears Roebuck and Company (remember when it was called that?) received their Easter ham free, according to this ad which ran in the Journal on March 31st, 1955.

We had a coldspot fridge growing up. I remember the metal ice cube tray. Ham and sweet potatoes for me.
Happy Easter Dan

Thanks, Todd! Happy Easter to you too! And sweet potatoes as a side-dish are a great idea!

Dan... The top half of today's post... There's something haywire with the formatting - the words run off the right side of the column. At least on my PC.

Dad's work used to gift workers with a ham every year, so ham it was at our place, usually with sweet-taters as one of the sides. I think Dad would've preferred lamb, but Mum refused to cook it because she "didn't like the smell." We always had a few extra folks in for the Easter meal, so the table was especially crowded and noisy. It's something I miss.

Happy Easter to those who celebrate it. And if you don't, plug in your nearest religious and/or pagan holiday!

I like how the IGA ad provides "Charm Tips" along with the Sno-Kreem Shortening ads. "Hazel, I like how you did your hair today!" "Thanks, Iris, I learned it from an IGA ad."

Happy Easter to all!

Don, I had a little issue with wraparound type in this blogger software; the post probably looked okay on a phone, and it looked fine on my iMac at home. But at work on my (ugh) PC it looked odd because the type did not reflow. Oh well. I found a better image for the top of the post, and I beefed up, I mean, I hammed up the post with a few more grocery ads.

Thanks, Dan! And I won't hold the "ugh" comment against you 'cause I know you're artsy and it goes with the territory.
