Botamer Florist Election Day Ad – Nov. 1, 1971

You don’t see too many ads for local companies with an Election Day theme anymore. The whole business of politics has gotten so unpleasant that it's turned off a significant portion of the population, making it an unlikely advertising gimmick.

But fifty years ago, it was still commonplace for a business to use its advertising to remind its customers to do their civic duty and vote, like the ad above for Botamer Florist. It ran in the Lorain Journal on Monday, November 1, 1971.

Fifty years ago, it was a pretty big election. Joseph Zahorec beat Woody Mathna for Lorain Mayor, and several neighboring communities (including Amherst, Avon, Sheffield and Sheffield Lake) all ended up with new mayors as well.

Here’s hoping you had a chance to vote, and that your candidates won.

By the way, Botamer Florist is still around – an unusual feat for this blog, which usually features ads for long-gone businesses. Here is the link to the Botamer Florist website, which proudly notes that the company has serving its customers since 1921 – making this its 100th year.
