Let's hang out at the Mall one more day – just like old times.
Here are some of the articles and ads surrounding the opening of Midway Mall back on Sept. 29, 1966. Everything was shiny and brand new then, and oozing with mod 1960s charm.

And here's the dolphin that Alan Hopewell mentioned in his comments on Wednesday's post.

Flapper? Hmmmm... must have been a cousin of Flipper. I'll bet there was a major flap when some Mall visitors thinking there were going to see a TV star realized that they'd been hornswoggled!
I wrote about this dolphin dilemma back
here.
And Franz gets second billing. Heavens to murgatroyd!
ReplyDeleteThere was a mystery connected with the early days of the Mall... one year (67?) it hosted a car show, and one of the featured vehicles was a Batmobile from the popular tv series. Evidently, when the car show ended, the Batmobile was loaded onto a trailer for the long trip to its next appointment, which it never reached.
ReplyDeleteThe car, trailer, and driver all vanished, and were never seen again.
I’m misty-eyed again as I review the map of stores…my husband and my first “date” was a stroll around Midway Mall…we’re celebrating 50 years of marriage this month. Toured New England during the bicentennial on our honeymoon! No hotel reservations, no cell phones, just an AAA “trip-tik” map & serendipity!
ReplyDeleteHappy Golden!
DeleteThanks, Alan
DeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteLet me add my own to Alan's congratulations, Wendy!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of going to one of the remaining malls today (Great Northern), not for the stores but because I can't walk outside due to the air quality.
