First up is 1946. Here's the front page of the Lorain Journal for January 2, 1946 – 80 years ago today.
There's a lot of tragedy on that page, including a headline story about the large number of violent deaths that occurred during the holiday. Other stories of a somber nature include the ongoing War Trials at Nuremberg and the impending hanging of Lord Haw Haw for treason. But there's also the happy story of the first baby born in Lorain. The proud parents of the "lusty, six-and-a-half pound baby boy" were Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Palumbo.
Exactly ten years later on January 2, 1956 this was the front page of the Lorain Journal.
Lastly, the First Baby of 1966 was Noel Figueroa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luis Figueroa of E. 34th Street.
Here's the spread listing the goodies for Noel and his parents, which ran in the Journal on January 4, 1966.

The 1946 and 1956 front pages certainly are grisly. You don't get that sort of stomach-churning detail with your morning paper these days.
ReplyDeleteWhenever someone waxes nostalgic about the good old day when things were calm and peaceful, I always want to smack them in the back of their head 'cause they have no idea what they're talking about.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't visited the confederate cemetery on Johnson Island, make the trip. Be sure to take a couple dollars (in cash) for the toll. Come to think of it, it's probably best to see what the gate's taking before you go. Then, take a trip around the private roads on the island to see how the other half lives.

The Chronicle had a "First Lorain County Baby of 2026" article today. No gifts were given though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting that! I was wondering if the newspapers still do that. Too bad about 'no gifts' though – they should have at least gotten a few McD gift cards!
