Pearl Harbor Day – 10 Years Later – Dec. 7, 1951

It's Pearl Harbor Day – the 84th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941 that launched our entry into World War II.

I've already posted the Lorain Journal front pages from December 6 through 11 (back here) so I thought I'd do something different. Above is the front page from the tenth anniversary on December 7, 1951.

The lead story is quite poignant with the account of the death of Petty Officer Eugene Fuzi from Lorain who was onboard the U. S. S. Helena during the attack. The article also includes the impact of the news of the attack on the citizens of Lorain.

Here's the page 2 continuation of the article.

It's all quite interesting reading.

Be sure to read the story of the Japanese admiral who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor. It's quite fascinating from his perspective as to why the attack happened when and where it did. The article includes his regrets, as well as his hopeful observation about the future.

  1. Thanks, Dan. These papers are always revealing and fascinating. And while the Pearl Harbor stories were far more important, I enjoyed the item about the Elyria bookie being put out of business. It's quaint.

    1. Hi Buster! I like that story about the bookie too, it seems like it's right out of "Guys and Dolls."

  2. I dated somebody born on Dec 7th. Her dad used to say, "Every ten years something interesting happens on December 7th."

  3. ....FWIW, the cruiser HELENA was also hit by a torpedo - and that torpedo hit actually sank a second ship. The minelayer OGALA, which had a wooden hull, was moored next to HELENA. The torpedo passed under OGALA, struck HELENA..and the shock of the explosion popped OGALA's seams. She was dragged away from HELENA and rolled over shortly afterwards.

Total losses that day on HELENA were 31 KIA, and 66 WIA, but they brought down 6 Japanese aircraft. I'd like to think Petty Officer Fuzi got one.
