Kroger Bread Ad – January 1960

I couldn’t resist posting this ad for Kroger Enriched Bread, which ran in the Lorain Journal on January 27, 1960. Like the ad I posted yesterday, this ad features a simple theme and a great cartoon illustration to go with it. I really like this type of advertising; it’s simple and memorable.

Here’s a closer look at the bread wrapper shown in the ad, which features the Krogermaid mascot.  The wrapper is from the collection of Jason Liebig.

(Jason has a terrific archive of new and vintage advertising (including rare packaging) at his flickr site, www.flickr.com/photos/jasonliebigstuff.)

It’s been a long time since anyone has done any Krogering in the Lorain area. The chain is still in Northeast Ohio, though. The one on E. Perkins in Sandusky is probably the closest.

You might even want to take a road trip out to Sandusky to pick up a fresh loaf of Kroger Enriched Bread. Unfortunately, there’s no updated Krogermaid on the wrapper.

I’ve written about Kroger before, including a post about the chain’s first store in Lorain in 1936. There’s also a March 1957 ad featuring Top Value Stamps and Toppie the Elephant, another 1957 ad with Toppie, and one from 1958 with a great illustration.
