The Passing Scene – April 1966

Gene's solution to prevent the theft of the Lakeview Park
Easter Basket's eggs: hide a cop inside one

Let's end the week with a few laughs. Here are all five of Gene Patrick's "The Passing Scene" comic strips that ran in the Journal back in April 1966. Enjoy!

The April 2nd edition humorously addressed a late March 1966 UFO sighting in Lorain.

The April 9th strip mentioned sonic booms – something that I remember from being a kid, as well as something that we experienced a few weeks ago.
The April 16th comic contains Gene's hilarious Lakeview Park Easter Basket cartoon.
The April 23nd edition gave Gene the opportunity to do a nice rendering of Hotel Antlers.
And finally, the April 30th strip foreshadowed the eventual replacement of Lorain City Hall and includes a cameo appearance by Batman and Robin.

  1. The defensive driving comic is pretty ironic. Today's cars do come equipped with pillows (airbags) all over the place.

  2. I remember reading so many of these for the first time, sixty-plus years ago; I wonder how many grade school students read the papers today, if they even have one.

  3. I always enjoyed these when they originally appeared, although as a child - its likely I didn’t always understand the context. I appreciate when you treat us with these posts Dan. Too bad we don’t have these today, but like Alan says, it’s doubtful youth are reading the local papers today.

  4. Thanks, Dan - These always take me back, in a pleasant way.

  5. One summer, our kids were given the honor of caring for the pre-skool pet gerbil, "Zippy." The teacher was pleased but genuinely shocked when we returned it, safe a sound, in the fall. She told us adults it was the first time such a thing had happened and they were on something like their 8th "Zippy."
