Hills Labor Day Ad – Sept. 1, 1968

Well, it’s Labor Day 2018 – a day off for everyone, honoring organized labor and working families. It's recognized as the unofficial end of summer, and consequently for many people it’s time to enjoy one last cookout.

Thus hotdogs are on my mind, and on my menu later today.

Hot dogs are also the dominant theme of the above Hills Department Store ad from the Lorain Journal. The ad ran in the paper on September 1, 1968 – 50 years ago.

All-you-can-eat eight-cent hotdogs are a pretty good deal and I’ll bet a lot of families doing some back-to-school shopping took advantage of it.

The kid in the ad looks pretty excited about those hot dogs. But I’m not sure having that ‘Newspaper Bingo’ bug wandering through an ad promoting picnic food is such a good idea, though.

  1. The Journal probably was is the car 50 years ago today as the family left Lorain for the last time heading west to Denver. Dad had been transferred by the company and it marked the first time any family member, on both sides of the family, had ever left Lorain to live somewhere else. I'm the only one left here as my three siblings live elsewhere now and Mom in Phoenix. Where have the decades gone!

  2. Would rather shop at Hills over Walmart any day. I miss that store.

  3. For real....Wal-Mart's got nothing on Hills, Ontario's, Gaylord's, all the great discount stores of days past.
Let's raise a cup of orangeade, and munch some Air-Popt popcorn in their memory.
