Moes Cider Mill Article – October 21, 1966

A view from the other night of the former cider mill
Fall is the season for apples, apple cider and donuts, and for many Vermilion residents, the place to go for these autumn treats was Moes Cider Mill on West River Road. Sadly, the business closed for good in early September and the property is for sale.

Sixty years ago, the Moes Cider Mill was the subject of a great article by Staff Writer Dona Norlock in the October 21, 1966 edition of the Lorain Journal. The article does a nice job describing the process and features some quotes by Nelson Moes.

Although I've tried many of the ciders produced by local orchards (I have a bottle of cider from Miller Orchards in Amherst in my fridge right now), I regret that I never had any from Moes. From the sound of the comments left on the Moes Cider Mill Facebook page, the cider mill and its various tasty offerings will be greatly missed.

  1. Just the other day, my husband & I were wondering if you ever wrote about Moe’s, so this is a nice surprise! We had been lamenting their closure, as going to Moe’s was an annual fall tradition of ours. Moe’s cider had a little tang - I think they used some of the tart, old apple varieties like Jonathan’s. We also would get caramel apples, as they usually had a few put out for sale as well. Such delightful memories - thanks, Dan.

  2. So sad to hear. I remember going there for the first time when I was 8 in 1977, a month after we moved there from South Lorain. We’d get cider, I’d pick out a pumpkin to carve and get a caramel apple. The cider went good with the glazed donuts from Schwensen’s Bakery downtown that were also sometimes available at the Vermilion Convenient Food Mart. I’m glad I went to Moe’s last year to get cider and the fresh, hot apple cider donuts they made. Had to wait in the packed parking lot for almost an hour because so many people were ordering them. At least I think it was last year. Could’ve been the year before. But, I do remember they smelled heavenly…

  3. In gradual skool, I had a buddy from NYC who was Ka-Ray-Zee for cider. When he found out there were ones nearby, he insisted we visit. When he witnessed the actual process, he absolutely refused to drink the stuff!

  5. Yes it really is a shame - they had the best cider and excellent donuts. Sad to see them close! I didn't know the property is for sale.
