Old Lake Road Alignment – W. of Ruggles Beach

Right next door to the west of the Berlin Township Oak Bluff Cemetery where Almon Ruggles' grave is located is this old alignment of US 6 Lake Road, trailing off towards the lake.

It seems to be a private drive at its terminus.

Portions of Lake Road between Lorain and Vermilion (such as near Oak Point, Beaver Park, and the Claus farm) were rerouted or improved in the 1930s. Perhaps this 1924 Rand McNally map (below) shows Lake Road near Ruggles Beach in its original alignment. It's fun to look at, either way.

The Historic Aerials website shows that the old alignment of Lake Road was still pretty much intact as late as 1958. But by the 1980s, you can see how it was altered to apparently accommodate new homes.

  1. Our family rented a house on that road back in the 1990s. It felt very secluded.

    1. It was just for a few days, maybe a week. I haven’t been to that area for some time but I’m pretty sure the house is still there.

  3. So the road was decommissioned anywhere between 1958 and 1969.And then the people recieved a gift of free land from the state.I wonder if they actually dug the road up or just let it grow over like Rte 66 out west in some spots?
