The ad, sponsored by the Lorain Telephone Company, encourages Americans to celebrate their First Amendment right by regularly attending worship services with their families.
The ad ran in the Lorain Journal on November 22, 1950.
Admittedly, some of the copy in the ad is a little odd, with the suggestion that the Pilgrims needed to carry firearms on the way to church because of the ‘painted Indians’ flitting like shadows in the woods.
(The headline – “We Don’t Carry Guns To Church Any More” – may or not be true either. Most state laws allow for concealed carry in churches, but churches are private property and may restrict firearms as they wish.)
But the basic message of the ad – that practicing our faith was the best weapon against Communism propaganda and misinformation – is a good one.
That would be a good title for a country song.I can just hear Randy Travis belting it out......"We don't carry guns to church anymore....And if we still did they would be loaded full bore!...Because we don't carry guns to church anymore.....It would be a big sin to still do it so we don't do it no more!...But poor Randy won't be singing no more as a stroke pretty much ended his career.
ReplyDeleteI would have thought that the gun,or should I say anti gun crowd would have chimed in by now.Guns must be a touchy subject, what with the Alec Baldwin shooting and the Rittenhouse verdict so fresh on everyones mind.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it’s not the best time to post an ad like this, and I was a little apprehensive as to what it might provoke.
ReplyDeleteJohnny Cash had a song called "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" back in 1958.This was when he started doing albums with themes. An example being an album would be all western songs or all political or just all weird and silly songs. So I could see a Weird Al Yankovic type like Roger Miller doing a parody of Johnnie's song with the word "Church" inserted in place of "Town".
