July 1964 – UFO Over Lorain!

Remember when Lorain was visited by a UFO?

The article above appeared in the Lorain Journal on July 20, 1964 and documents that event with a nifty illustration of the rocket ship-shaped UFO by Lorain resident J. Richard Lukovics.

The follow-up article on July 21, 1964 (below) notes that many people saw the same thing. But the FAA wasn't volunteering any information. Sounds like a cover-up to me!

I remember as a kid worrying about UFOs landing (that is, when I wasn't worrying about Lorain being wiped off the map by another tornado). It probably had something to do with my hearing the recording of the original Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast when I was very young. The radio drama is still scary if you happen to catch a replay of it around Halloween.

To add to my irrational fears, I remember my parents jokingly saying that our July 4th firework displays probably caught the attention of beings from other planets. Naturally, the aliens would want to see what the ruckus was all about, and would swoop into our atmosphere for a closer look.

I don't know if there are more UFOs reported around July 4 or not, but I still associate visitors from another planet with our country's birthday celebration.

Coincidentally, I watched some of the SyFy Channel's traditional holiday Twilight Zone marathon on July 4, and it seemed most of the episodes I saw had a storyline about invaders from Mars!

  1. I remember a "fireball" that streaked cross the sunset sky , headed toward the lake; this was September of '67, IIRC.

  2. Wasn't there another UFO in the 70s out by the Lorain DriveIn Theatre?

I remember that night. I now live south in WV. I have family still up in Lorain however no one has time to get the article for me that was in the Lorain journal. I had emailed the the newspaper but they said that they had lost all archives do to a fire. They advised me to go to the library and that the library would be able to locate the article. If you would like I have dates close to when it was sighted and maybe you could research and find it for me. I would pay ya for your time.

  3. That sounds familiar, although I'm blank on details.

There was a triangular-shaped one seen during the summer of '88; I saw that one, as well.

  4. I was 12 or 13 at the time and at my gradfathers in Cleveland on W. 103rd.
I was playing out in the front of the house close to the street.
If its the same one it was low, lit-up the whole sky, I looked up and saw a round glowing orange ball with yellow and the surfaces looked as if it were boiling. There was tail, but I was so surprised and scared I ran back into the house to tell people bu no one listens to a kid. I've ben surchig for detailson it off and on for years and a call o email to what I think was NASA, told me to contact JPL out in California. We didn't hav cell phones back then and long distsnce was expensive, so I never made th call.

Years later on TV the had a program about the Kecksburg ufo incident and thought maybe tht could have been it, but something was off, either the dates or the trajectory, I don't remember?
