St. Joseph Hospital Parking Garage – Nov. 1970

Fifty years ago this month, St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain was busy constructing its new 595-car parking garage. According to the item above, which appeared in the Journal on November 21, 1970, “The work is beyond the halfway point and the first two levels are expected to be finished by the original target date in mid-December."

It’s interesting that that the caption notes, “The sagging appearance of the garage is caused by the upward slopes of the ramps.”

(I posted an architectural rendering of the parking garage and other proposed additions to the hospital back here.)

Fast forward to 2020, and – you guessed it – the garage and the rest of the empty St. Joseph complex are slated to come down. There’s a fence around the whole property, and demolition has begun.

Sad state of affairs when the citys hospital is torn down.Fords Lorain Assembly Plant half torn down.Thew Shovel torn down.Lorain Stove Works torn down. The old railroad turntable torn down. The old ship unload terminal torn down.Lorain Shipyard torn down.Lorain High,Admiral King and Southview all torn down...Etc.Lorains heyday is long gone.Replaced by service type jobs that don't pay people enough to have a decent living. It will never come back.

I loved the view from the top of the parking garage.

It was a great view! They should have put a concession stand on top and some of those big binoculars.

I don't think it would be a very good view from that part of town.Reid Avenue has alot of drug activity and prostitution going on.Plus alot of run down slum lord houses dot that part of Lorain.

I believe the parking garage is not going to be torn down. There was an article in the Journal recently that said it was still in really good shape and they might use it for the future retail businesses that they envision on the hospital land.

Wow, thanks for posting that and I apologize if I got it wrong. I don’t get the MJ regularly and I’ve been trying to determine what exactly is being torn down from the articles I do see. At least when Alan makes his trip back to Lorain he can still enjoy the view!
